Reflection

Today Zavier drew our diagram and I continued researching, finishing our body writing. Him and I are working together fine, and we're up to date with most our work. We'll need to buckle down a little bit more and start Woking on presentation next lesson.

Today I mainly tried to focus on finishing my short Essay, I also began to create a diagram showing the order of events for the Earthquake and Tsunami. Unfortunately I strayed a little off topic but will clean it up next week. Overall was a pretty solid lesson.

The research today went really good, I got down a lot of needed and helpful notes.

I'll focus a little more on working with my pair to insure we're both on the same page about the task.

London To New Zealand

London was always a very crowded place, there weren’t enough general services to match the
population. Not enough departure stations, Police stations or stores. With the population being
so large, the crime rates were big. Most crimes committed were just petty thefts, assaults and
drunk disorderly. Still, hardly any of these crimes were ever brought upon a judge. Almost a
quarter of the people living in London could afford proper housing, they were forced to live in
utter slum and insanity. It sometimes even cost to use a public toilet. Overall London was an
awful place to live, people were getting constantly sick because literal raw sewage was being
pumped into the local rivers causing multiple outbreaks. It was horrific.

There were some posters put up around the bars and stores promoting this country called “New
Zealand”. The sign read all about “Huge Land Masses” and many freedoms, it was intriguing
and I was convinced.

The journey was average. Everyone that couldn’t afford upper class were crammed into a small
section of the ship. The estimated travel time was up to 6 months, possibly more. The food mainly consisted of fish and soups, people would just bring their own supplies as the ship offered very little and unappetizing dishes.

We arrived in New Zealand 5 months and 8 days after leaving London. I settled very quickly and
easily, back in London I only earned 1 pound an hour, however here I didn’t get showered
in money, but I was earning a lot more than I ever had before I moved, So being able to
buy a small house here was really exciting. I got a cottage  In Wellington. It had a beautiful
view of the ocean. There wasn’t anyone for miles, it was quiet and the weather was calm.
The locals were generally kind, I felt safe. I was home.

What have I learnt about it? 

That the tone and genre of music can tell a story, and set the vibe. You can express emotions easily with the right technique.

What is the best technique I've tried? I liked advertising music. I think it's cool how someone can put together tunes and make whatever they're promoting persuasive. They can set a vibe and almost put you into the mood for the advertisement.

Building a bridge

Aim: I want to build a bridge over a 30cm gap.

Equipment:
News paper
Sellotape

Research:

Method:
1. Roll multiple pages of news paper up into tubes and seal hold with cello tape.
2. Tape together multiple a4 paper tubes to form the platform of the bridge
3. Tape together 8x A4 paper tubes to form the struts/Braces of the bridge
4. Tape together multiple tubes for the bracing beam at the top of the structs.

English Essay

The Power of One

In the film ‘The Power Of One’ Directed by John Avidsen there was an important scene where there is a confrontation between two characters, there are specific techniques the director has used in order to make the scene what it was. These techniques include Low-Key lighting and Low angle camera shots

The director uses low key lighting in this scene which completely changed the vibe. For example, the lighting in this scene indicates it’s late, dark and secluded. I think John Avidsen, the Directors overall intent was to set a ‘tone’ and set a ‘vibe’. If it were light or if they were outside, for example, the scene would have felt different. The lighting really helped make this scene. Once again back to the tone and vibe. The viewers automatically felt a certain way about this scene before anything happened. Small aspects built up. In the Geel Piets death scene, the lighting was dark. The scene would not have felt the same with different lighting.

The angles in the scene were crucial. The Director uses multiple low-angle shots. For example, there are a lot of points in this scene that it shows Jaapie is dominant over PK//looking down on him. I feel the Director’s intent was to show Jaapies masculinity over PK. And to highlight that he had the upper hand. 

This camera angle helped me see that PK was alone in this situation. That Jaapie and all the other children were against and looking down on helpless little PK. It showed PK had no strength. I link this scene to when Geel Piet was forced to eat feces off Sargeant Borman’s shoe. In these scenes, the victims were both helpless, and the high angle shot made it clear who was in charge at that point in time.

John Avidsen uses a lot of different techniques in this scene, the main one being facial expressions and gestures. Jaapies sly expressions show us that he had cruel intentions heading into this scene. PK’s near emotionless face toward indicates ds the end of the scene after the chicken is killed makes us feel sympathy for him. I feel the Director's purpose was to add a layer on top of what was going on. He didn’t overdo the expressions, but he didn’t lack the use of them. I link this scene to when PK is being visited by the medicine man. We could read what was going on and how he felt merely by his expression. 

In conclusion, it is clear that things such as lighting and certain angles can completely make or break a scene. The directors intent was clear and well received by the audience. This movie had raw and real elements which made it unique.
